So regarding my last post the guy claims it’s a 98 ITR straight from Japan and has been registered (with its JDM VIN) since 2010. I questioned this and he said since we got the an Integra he can register it as that and insure it as that. Is he using a massive loophole or is this actually “legit”

I remember something like the manufacturer can issue a letter saying that the car is the same as one sold in another country, but I have actually no idea how that would work.

If the car in question is similar enough to a car already cleared for sale in the US, it’s legal to import.

Your state DMV may not care about federal laws (which are all about FMVSS). So, you get a title, but there’s the risk that the car gets crushed for violating import laws at the federal level. It happens. Skylines, Land Rovers, etc. Some states (I’m lookin’ at you, FL) give no fucks. They’ll title a Home Depot paint bucket with a moped engine and blinkers if you ask ‘em to.

The car has to by similar to the car sold on the U.S. market. Sometimes the NHTSA want a letter from the manufacturer to confirm it but isn’t that hard to get from the company.
Personally I’d check it through the DMV and the NHTSA. Last thing you’d want is to buy the car, give him the cash, give your state the tax and then the government decide they want the car.
